올해도 어김없이 BBC Proms 행사가 시작된다.

BBC Proms 행사는 쉽게 말하면 세계적인 클래식 축제라고 생각하면된다. 하루만에 끝나는게 아니라 장기간 여러 콘서트홀에서 유명 클래식 음악가들을 초빙하여, 콘서트를 벌인다.

위 영상은 엘가의 위풍당당 행진곡... 그런데 이 엘가는 영국 음악의 자존심이다. 엘가가 등장하기 전만 하더라도, 영국 대표적인 음악가가 두드러지게 나오지 못했기 때문... 위풍당당행진곡은 BBC Proms 마지막 행사에 관객들이 같이 부른다 ㅎ 전세계에서 온 관객들이 자신의 국기를 들고 흔들면서 합창하는 모습은 BBC Proms 가 클래식에서 큰 행사임을 짐작할 수 있다.

PROM 7: SCHUMANN, SCHOENBERG & MOZART

  Omer Meir Wellber makes his Proms debut as the BBC Philharmonic’s newly appointed Chief Conductor Designate. South Korean pianist Yeol Eum Son joins them as soloist in Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 15 in B flat major – with its intricate wind writing and lively hunting-horn finale. Schumann’s mould-breaking Fourth Symphony, with its opening journey from darkness to blazing light, is paired with Schoenberg’s revolutionary Five Orchestral Piece and Paul Ben-Haim’s 1940 Symphony No. 1 – an emotive musical statement at a time of international conflict.

피아니스트 손열음의 첫 BBC Proms 2019 데뷔 무대다. 자랑스럽다. 개인적으로 협연 무대를 어느 단체와 하느냐는 중요한 커리어인거 같다. 왜냐하면 한국에서 필자가 서울에 방문하니 수많은 독주회들이 있었는데.... 누구 공연의 티켓을 사야하는지에 대한 고민을 좀 더 쉽게 찾는 방법 중 하나이기 때문이다. (물론, 나같이 어쩌다 한번 클래식 공연가는 사람에게 해당하는 이야기다. 모든 독주회는 소중하고 중요하다.) 손열음 개인 홈페이지나 Facebook 이나 다른 언론에도 크게 홍보가 안되는 것이 조금 아쉽다.

PROM 48: RACHMANINOV & PROKOFIEV

  Rachmaninov’s mighty Symphony No. 2 sits at the centre of this concert given by Cristian Măcelaru and the BBC Symphony Orchestra. From a brooding opening it moves through a lovely slow movement to an ecstatic close – one of the most triumphant in the repertoire. There’s more drama and still greater virtuosity in Prokofiev’s demanding Piano Concerto No. 2, performed here by 2015 Chopin International Piano Competition winner Seong-Jin Cho. The concert opens with the folk-inspired Three Pieces for strings by the Romanian composer-conductor Constantin Silvestri, who defected to the West in 1956 and died in London 50 years ago.

작년 쇼팽에 이어 올해는 프로코피에프로 BBC 심포니와 협연을 하는 조성진. 대단하다.

PROM 63: YUJA WANG PLAYS RACHMANINOV

  Explosively virtuosic and a thrilling live performer, Yuja Wang is the soloist in Rachmaninov’s emotionally expansive and technically demanding Third Piano Concerto – one of the most challenging in the repertoire. She joins conductor Myung-Whun Chung and the Staatskapelle Dresden – the second of this week’s visiting European orchestras – for a concert that also includes Brahms’s genial Symphony No. 2, whose freshness and spontaneity have drawn comparisons with Beethoven’s ‘Pastoral’ Symphony.

유자왕의 공연. 거기에 정명훈이 함께 했다. 말이 필요없다. 이미 티켓 열리고 나서 금방 매진되었다. 해외 언론쪽에도 BBC Proms 소개하면서 비평가들의 관심을 받다보니..... 날짜와 시간 맞춰서 BBC Radio 3 실황 듣자.
